With Comcast-NBC conditions, Feds try to open a door to online video

Ideally, nobody should have to worry about one TV and Internet provider buying a TV network. In that ideal world, you'd have enough choices for those services that competition would keep the newly combined company honest.

New iPad Battery Life

The new iPad has the same battery life as the iPad 2. This may strike some as peculiar because the iPad 3 has a new more highly-powered battery. However, although the battery does carry more juice, this is offset by the new features of the iPad 3 which require more power, for example the high-definition Retina display and the 4G connectivity. That said, the new iPad battery life is still perfectly reasonable and is suitable both for casual at-home use [...]

Windows autoloading programs: You don't want too many, but you may want these

After reading my article on stopping autoloading programs, Quietone asked “What programs are really needed during start up?”

Most Windows PCs autoload a ridiculous number of programs every time you boot. And as I explained in the previous article, disabling most of them could improve performance. The programs will still be there when you want them, but they wouldn’t be hanging around in RAM, using up resources, when they’re not needed.

U.S. warns against blocking social media, elevates Internet freedom policies

The decision by Egyptian officials to virtually shut down Internet access to the country Friday marked an audacious escalation in the battle between authoritarian governments and tech-savvy protesters. It was also a direct challenge to the Obama administration's attempts to promote Internet freedom.

Verizon iPhone 4 doesn't represent a huge advance over AT&T's

A funny thing happened Thursday: Verizon finally started selling the iPhone, and mass hysteria did not erupt. After years of yearning and months of hype, there was not a mass rush to Apple's and Verizon's stores.

Google's Q1 2015 'other' revenues segment impacted by 'decline in Nexus'

Speaking in the Google Q1 2015 earnings call, CFO Patrick Pichette indicated Nexus revenues declined this quarter.

Revenues from the Play Store (and now Google Store) are such a small portion of Google's business that they're clumped into an "other revenues" category each quarter, but that doesn't stop the company from reporting how they impact the bottom line. In Q1 2015 the other revenues segment actually grew substantially, despite an actual decline in earnings from selling Nexus devices.

HP Envy x360, Pavilion x360 convertible laptops get makeovers, better battery life

HP knows consumers are into the sexy looks of high-end convertibles like the Spectre x360, but can’t always put out the shekels for it. So with its revamped Pavilion x360 and Envy x360 lineups, the company’s extended the look and feel of the Spectre x360 to more budget-friendly consumer machines.

In a briefing with PCWorld, Mike Nash of HP said hybrid laptops offered appealing versatility for consumers. "A lot of people who buy a hybrid initially wanted a tablet," he explained, but the ability to have a keyboard turned many to convertibles instead. "The key thing is to have a design that looks like a notebook," Nash said, noting that users seemed to use it most in clamshell mode.
