The Top 8 Features of iOS 7 That Actually Matter

One of the best things about Apple's iOS machine is how it churns out a new release every year that packs new features that most every old iPhone or iPad can use. Upgrades. You can count on something new from Apple even when you're not standing in line to buy a shiny new iPhone 5S or 5C. Other manufacturers push out updates too, but none are as good at it as Apple.

Cruzerlite SPI-Force Galaxy Note 2 case review

Cruzerlite SPI-Force Galaxy Note 2 case

A phone case for the unapologetic Android fan among us

Trying to get a case for the Galaxy Note 2 that protects it but doesn't add too much more bulk to an already large device is tough, and Cruzerlite has decided to not even attempt to keep things small with its SPI-Force case offering. Instead, what you are getting for the extra bulk is serious protection around the entire device and a sturdy center-mounted kickstand for when you need it.

This is going to be a polarizing case design, but it's one worth looking at if you need some intense protection for your Note 2. Stick with us after the break and learn a little more about the Cruzerlite SPI-Force case.

Best iPhone and iPad apps for getting around the London Underground

Best iPhone and iPad apps for getting around the London Underground

If you live in, or visit London at any point, there's a higher than average chance you'll use the infamous 'Tube' to get around the city. It's busy, it's cramped, but it's still the quickest way generally of getting from A-to-B and avoiding the horrendously congested roads. But what if you don't know how to get where you're going, or just generally want to keep the latest Underground information at your fingertips? The good news is there's some great apps for your iPhone and iPad to help you get around on the Underground.

Tube Map

This has been one of my own go-to apps for a long time now, partly because the developers have the exact same app available on the other mobile platforms, and partly because it has literally everything on hand to help you get around the Tube. If you want to set up notifications for certain lines, you can, as well as viewing full status of all the different lines, live departures, and plan your route anywhere around the city. There's a couple of in-app purchase options, one to remove ads and one to add first and last train times, but otherwise this is free, and a fantastic choice for anyone using the Underground.

Tube Map Live

Tube Map Live serves a distinct purpose, but it serves it very well. Instead of focusing on routing, what this does is show you live, real-time information on where the trains are as they move around the network. It uses official Transport for London data, but if you tap on any of the trains shown on the map, it'll tell you where that train is headed as well as showing its position on the line. The colored circle around the outside of the train icon tells you which line that train is on, and the ticker across the bottom continually scrolls through with live line status information.

This one is perfect for anyone who knows where they need to go, and how to get there, but needs to know where the trains are, what lines they're on and how the service is running. Oh, and it looks pretty fantastic as well.

Citymapper

Citymapper goes far beyond just Tube travel, it's a complete one-stop shop for all your London travelling needs. But the Underground aspect is done particularly well, with a full offline map on board alongside the expected routing information, line statuses and live departure information. One particularly neat trick Citymapper has is that it'll tell you what it's going to cost for your proposed journeys. Just for that extra touch.

It looks amazing, too. It's a gorgeous app to look at and to use, and is perfect for anyone who needs their Tube information sprinkled with a little bit of all-round travel planning.

Tube Tracker

Tube Tracker is actually from the same developer as Tube Map Live, and that's not cheating because they're two very different apps. Tube Tracker is a more full featured Underground travel app, and mixes gorgeous design with live departure boards, a full map, offline route planner, notifications, and the same visual train tracking that Tube Map Live enjoys. If the simplicity of Tube Map Live isn't for you but you still want that feature, then Tube Tracker is the one to get.

Microsoft's Surface RT snafu prompts shareholder suit

Unsurprisingly, a New York law firm has filed the first class-action lawsuit alleging that Microsoft misled investors over the state of its Surface with Windows RT tablet.

Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd LLP claims that Microsoft made “false and misleading” statements about its financial performance and the Surface RT tablet between April 18, 2013 and July 18, 2013. During that time, the firm alleges, Microsoft knew that the Surface RT was experiencing poor customer demand and lackluster sales, and that it had materially declined in value.

Microsoft couldn’t be reached for comment at press time.

On July 18, Microsoft took a $900 million charge against earnings, writing down the value of the Surface tablet after it reduced its price by $150. It later discounted the Surface Pro by $100 as well, although Microsoft representatives haven’t said whether or not the $900 million accounted for those discounts, either.

Google demands veto on OEM Android changes, stretches definition of 'open source'

Google, according to reports from "a dozen executives working at key companies in the Android ecosystem" is finally locking down the open source and easily-fragmented Android operating system.

As it currently stands, Google hands over the 'final' code for each version of Android, and OEMs and developers then spend some time customizing the OS to fit their hardware, and to create a unique and marketable flavor. That's all set to change, however.

Over the last few months, according to several people familiar with the matter, Android licensees such as HTC, Motorola and Facebook, have been asked to sign 'non-fragmentation clauses.' This new contract caveat will give Google the right to review and pass judgment on all changes to the Android OS. Two executives at Facebook say that they're unhappy that Google gets to review its changes to Android -- which is understandable, given Facebook and Google are direct competitors -- and there have also been allegations that Google is preventing some Verizon devices from shipping because they include Microsoft's Bing instead of Google search.

Speedtest.net overhauled with new look, new features

speedtest
Speedtest.net is pretty much the go-to site for quickly figuring out how fast (or slow) your connection really is and comparing the numbers your ISP boasts with what it actually delivers. And now it's got a new coat of paint and a couple of neat features. In brief:
  • New UI: The map widget is much improved; it actually looks like a map now, and it's easy to see where you are.
  • Smart server selection: If there are several test servers nearby, Speedtest will now ping each to see which has the least latency and use that for the test. You can still specify servers manually, too.
  • User accounts: You can sign up for a free account and aggregate results from several computers/connections.
  • Speed Wave: This new feature lets you add your test results to the results of many other users, and get a nice composite view.
All in all, you get some nice, new functionality and a snazzier interface to boot. Nice!

Inside the Bar of the Very Near Future, Where You’re the Bartender

Inside the Bar of the Very Near Future, Where You’re the Bartender
Some bars really make you work for your drink. You wave and feint to catch the bartender’s eye, and even then your scotch might be made with unspecial cubes of booze-diluting ice. Life’s no bowl of maraschino cherries for bar ...

New iPad Quad Core Graphics

Prior to the unveiling of the new iPad 3, there was a lot of speculation and rumors about what processor would be on board and what features the new tablet. The older iPad 2 came with an A5 processor which included a dual core graphics processor and 512mb of RAM. The graphics processor takes care of all the display functions whilst the main processor handles all of the other functions. A lot of the rumors prior to the new iPad [...]

New Payment Card Standards Go Beyond Compliance

Standards can be a way to get organizations to do things you want them to do, but oftentimes they don't get them to do much more. The writers of payment-card standards appear to have been acutely aware of that phenomenon when the PCI Security Standards Council previewed their new PCI DSS 3.0 standard earlier this month.
