The Rampant, Risky Babbling of Android Apps

Eurecom researchers recently developed an Android app that can monitor the network traffic of other apps to alert users of suspicious or malicious activity. With more than 1.2 million applications in the Google Play store, there are multiple programs for performing a particular task. That can make choosing an app a chore for users, they noted in a report released last month.

Apple vs. Lenovo: Lenovo's Coming-Out Party

If there is one vendor on the planet that has the capability to fight Apple -- on paper, it is Lenovo. Lenovo this week will hold its annual Lenovo Tech World event in China, showcasing the company's new breadth. While it would be easy to position this as the U.S. against China, Lenovo is actually far more of a multinational company, with executives balanced between the U.S. and China.

Origin EON15-X review: You'll find a desktop CPU in this laptop, and that's a good thing

It’s time to go Glengarry Glen Ross on dual-core processors in gaming laptops. As in, hey dual-core processor, I’ve got some bad news for you from downtown: Mitch and Murray said you’re fired because gaming laptops should go to closers. And yes, dual-core, you can’t close the deal on high-end gaming laptops anymore.

That’s why we have Origin PC’s EON15-X here. It’s a closer.

What makes it a closer? The desktop-grade Core i7-4790K CPU powering it. Yes, that’s none other than Intel’s Devil’s Canyon CPU. While most mobile gaming quad cores struggle to crack the 3GHz barrier, the Core i7-4790K in the EON150X cruises along at 4GHz and will Turbo up to 4.4GHz.

Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro Hands-On Video Review: A Flexible, Capable Ultrabook

Lenovo's Yoga 3 Pro 2-in-1 ultrabook has made a bit of a splash as of late, from appearing in a number of holiday shopping-infused TV spots, to flash prank comparisons tricking unwitting mall shoppers into thinking they got framed for busting up a MacBook Air laptop. It's with good reason that Lenovo is making an effort to amplify interest

New iPad Battery Life

The new iPad has the same battery life as the iPad 2. This may strike some as peculiar because the iPad 3 has a new more highly-powered battery. However, although the battery does carry more juice, this is offset by the new features of the iPad 3 which require more power, for example the high-definition Retina display and the 4G connectivity. That said, the new iPad battery life is still perfectly reasonable and is suitable both for casual at-home use [...]

Smartphone use makes cellular networks' collapse a real possibility

The first thing to go might be your smartphone's connection to YouTube, with videos becoming increasingly choppy and then one day just failing to download. Recover a stolen laptop, or prepare for the day your laptop is stolen

Sylvia Chepkurui asked, “Can I recover my stolen laptop using the serial number?”

Probably not, but having the serial number gives you at least some chance of recovery. Without it, even if the police find your laptop in a stash of stolen property, you would have no way of proving it’s yours.

And no, booting the computer, entering your password, and showing your files won’t work—unless it’s recovered in the first few hours after the theft. Stolen computers’ hard drives are almost always wiped clean of any record of the lawful owner.

How to extend the life of your laptop battery

Siddhartha Raval asked how to take care of a laptop battery so that it lasts a long time.

Batteries don't last forever. Like everything except diamonds and viral tweets, they eventually wear out. But with proper care, a laptop battery can still carry a sufficient charge until you're ready to move on to a better laptop.

But it's a tradeoff. Taking the best care of your laptop battery just may be more of a hassle than it's worth.

AMD Radeon graphics run Witcher 3 just fine, unless Nvidia HairWorks is enabled--and that's OK

Despite suffering from occasional sub-30 frames per second stuttering on consoles, the PC version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt earned our stamp of approval for its gorgeous visuals, graphics settings galore, and far-superior-to-console frame rates. But even though the game ran at a fairly consistent 60fps at 1080p with mostly maxed-out settings on our reviewer’s GeForce GTX 970, we didn’t want to settle the issue there.

Why? Because The Witcher 3 features Nvidia’s proprietary GameWorks middleware technology—most notably HairWorks, which enables incredibly realistic hair. Social media has been full of widespread fears that HairWorks would hinder performance on AMD cards. With the PhysX-enabled Project CARS (which is not a GameWorks title) still running like crap on AMD hardware, some gamers are understandably skittish.

Surface 3 review: This is the one worth recommending, though it’s no bargain

The Surface 3’s selling points can be summed up neatly: This is Microsoft’s basic Office machine, a cheaper alternative to the Surface Pro 3. Thanks to the new Surface’s Intel Atom chip and real Windows 8.1 (with an upgrade path to Windows 10), it offers decent battery life, with a processor sufficient to handle 1080p YouTube videos, Netflix streams, or basic games without batting an eye.

As with any junior member of a product line, there are compromises. The biggest are its price—it not quite as inexpensive as it should be, for what you get; and the ergonomics, which make it less of a laptop replacement than the Surface Pro 3 clearly can be.
